Char Dham

Uttarakhand, known as the land of Gods, has many temples where people visit throughout the year. One of the most important pilgrimages for devotees here is called Char Dham Yatra. This pilgrimage takes you to four holy places: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, all located high in the Himalayas. In Hindi ‘Char’ means four and ‘Dham’ means religious place.

These temples remain closed for about six months every year during winter and reopen in summer, usually in April or May. The yatra is usually performed in a specific order, starting from Yamunotri, then Gangotri, Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Some people also do Do Dham Yatra, visiting only Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Yamunotri Temple is situated in a narrow valley near the source of Yamuna River in Uttarkashi district. Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is in Rudraprayag district. Kedarnath dedicated to Lord Shiva is also in Rudraprayag district. Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is in Chamoli district.

Char Dham Yatra is both a spiritual journey and challenging, but it gives peace to the soul.
